The Atalanti Trail
A long, gentle forest loop that circles the roof of Cyprus through cool black pines.
The Atalanti Trail is the long way round the roof of Cyprus — a near-level forest path that contours right around Mount Olympus, staying high and cool under the black pines with far-off glimpses of both coasts.
What you'll see
- A gentle, near-level 14 km loop circling the summit of Mount Olympus
- Cool, shaded black-pine and juniper forest even in high summer
- The Atalanti spring — a welcome drinking-water stop midway
- An old abandoned chromium-mine tunnel cut into the mountainside
- Long views over the Troodos range, and both coasts on a clear day

The walk
The trail sets off from near Troodos Square and settles into an easy contour line around the peak, so there is very little climbing despite the distance.
Midway you reach the Atalanti spring — a chance to refill — and, a little further, the mouth of an old chromium mine bored into the rock.
The loop keeps to the shade of the pines the whole way round, returning you to where you started with the summit always above you.
Getting there
The trail starts near Troodos Square, the hub of the mountain resort, reached on the main roads up from Limassol, Nicosia or Platres. There is parking at the square. Get directions →
Good to know before you go
At 14 km this is a long walk, though the gradient is gentle — allow most of a morning and wear proper shoes. There is drinking water at the Atalanti spring, but carry your own too. The high forest is cool and shaded, making it a superb summer escape from the coast.
